Carotid Doppler is the name given to an ultrasound examination of the carotid artery. It is a particularly effective diagnostic method for the early detection of vascular calcification and thus essential for stroke and heart attack prevention.
In our cardiology practice, we recommend ultrasound examination of the carotid artery to all patients who have one of the following risk factors for arteriosclerosis: high blood pressure, long-term stress, long-term smoking, diabetes mellitus, cardiac insufficiency, cardiac arrhythmias, or a family history/predisposition to vascular disease. In addition to early detection and risk assessment for a stroke or heart attack, the carotid Doppler examination offers another important advantage: It can also be used to analyze existing deposits in the vessels with regard to their degree of stenosis and thus develop effective therapeutic strategies.
